Abstract

The data excerpt of this study is taken from the data manual “Borscheid, P./Drees, A. (Hrsg.), 1988: Versicherungsstatistik Deutschland 1750 – 1985” The "insurance statistics in Germany (Versicherungsstatistik Deutschlands )" is one of the publications emerged as result from the work of the German Research Foundation’s priority program "sources and research on the historical statistics of Germany." The aim of the priority program was to gain by new research historical deeper, regional subdivided and thematically broad time series data. The fourth volume “Versicherungsstatistik Deutschlands 1750-1985 (Insurance Statistics of Germany) by Peter Borscheid and Anette Drees contains longterm time series, describing the development of different classes of insurances in Germany and the multiplication of risks, leading to increasing protection requirements. Forms of prevention and care changed during the time (see also the study:„Sozialversicherungsstatistik Deutschlands 1885- 1984“ , Peter Borscheid und Anette Drees; ZA8347, in HISTAT). Initial objective was to provide a detailed, by region structured insurance statistics going back as far as possible. The issue is structured by the individual classes of insurances and contains in addition to the individual insurances the social insurances and the insurances of the German Democratic Republic. The underlying data excerpt of this study is dedicated to the subject “Personal insurance, social insurance and property insurance of the former GDR between 1950 and 1985”. In the second half of 1945 for each of the five provinces of the Soviet Occupation Zone, a government insurance company was set up responsible for all forms of insurances. Fire insurances of industrial and handicrafts enterprises’ buildings and facilities, the auto liability insurance, as well as the crop hail insurance for agricultural areas has been declared as obligatory insurances.
