Abstract

Reasons for loss of interest in participation in the terminal text field experiment in Duesseldorf. Topics: 1. Telephone interview: a) interest in BTX: possession of television set; knowledge about the BTX experiment; person originally requesting information about terminal text from the Post Office; reason for interest in BTX; knowledge about experience of others with BTX; detailed reason for non-participation in BTX; current interest in participation. b) details on television possession and telephone use; type and age of television sets in household; intent to purchase a TV; private or occupational use of telephone; extent to which informed about the possibilities of BTX; attitude to various objections expressed against terminal text. c) utilization of Post Office services: frequency of utilization of announcement services of the Post Office; possible use of announcement services or other information for household via terminal text; sample of possibly interesting BTX offerings; cost-benefit comparison of BTX information. 2. Oral survey: reason for non-participation in the BTX experiment; disappointment about the possibilities to use BTX; sources of information about BTX; manner of one´s own search for information; adequate knowledge about technical prerequisites for participation in BTX; efforts to obtain information from businesses about television sets usable with BTX; delivery difficulties of businesses; personal or technical reasons for loss of interest in BTX; possible areas of use for terminal text; judgement on the economy of BTX; unknown possibilities of use at discontinuation; differences of opinion in household at planned acquisition; assessment of usefulness of terminal text for children; feared conflicts of interest in use of telephone, television and BTX within the family; alternative purchase decisions in the decision for BTX; possible revision of the decision to reject it.
