Initially 250 persons were selected, as of the end of the 70´s between 400 and 500. As of 1990 the new states were also included, which increased the number of cases to 700. A third of these were interviewed in the new states. The sample took place in part according to a quota procedure, in part according to a random procedure and was enhanced at regular intervals (mostly according to the snowball procedure).
