The general aims of the study are to assess the impacts of Phase One of Metrolink, Manchester's Light Rail system on:
(i) Various aspects of travel behaviour (especially choice of travel mode) and travel demand, and
(ii) On changes in economic activity and land uses (such as retailing, offices, leisure facilities).

Origin postcode; boarding station and time; waiting and travelling times; alighting station; destination postcode; access to and egress from stations; journey purpose and frequency; car availability and driving licence; rail ticket type; personal information: gender, age, employment status, social class; mode of travel used for equivalent journey in 1990 (B and C only); mode of transport to be used on the return journey (C only).

three waves - the 'before' (1990) and 'after' (1993) surveys were conducted with British Rail train or Metrolink tram passengers at the same ten stations in Greater Manchester, the Sunday survey (1993) with Metrolink tram passengers only.

File A: tripmakers boarding British Rail trains (travelling inbound towards Manchester city centre) at ten stations in: (a) The Thursday morning peak period (0730 to 0930); (b) The Thursday morning off-peak period (0930 to 1100 or up to 1300 depending on target sample size); (c) Saturday morning (0930 to 1200). File B: tripmakers boarding Metrolink trams or British Rail trains (travelling inbound towards Manchester city centre) at ten stations in: (a) The Thursday morning peak period (0730 to 0930); (b) the Thursday morning off-peak period (0930 to 1100 or up to 1300 depending on target sample size); (c) Saturday morning (0930 to 1200). File C: Persons boarding Metrolink trams travelling inbound towards Manchester city centre at all Metrolink stations (execpt those in the city centre fare band) on one Sunday afternoon from 1300 to 1800 approximately. Files A and B: ten stations in Greater Manchester were covered: Bury, Whitefield, Crumpsall, Stretford, Brooklands and Altrincham which were all on the rails lines which were converted to Metrolink in 1990; Mills Hill, Moston, Levenshulme and Hazel Grove all on British Rail lines which were not converted. File C: all stations on the Metrolink system except those in the Manchester city centre fare band.

Sampling procedure

(A) No sampling (total universe) at poorly patronised stations; one-stage stratified or systematic random sample at other stations. (B) and (C) No sampling - whole universe covered.
