Abstract

Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.

The Employers Skills Surveys are undertaken to identify the extent, causes and implications of skill deficiencies reported by employers in England. The series addresses a number of key questions:
  • What are the skill needs of employers?
  • What is the scale of, and the contribution of a lack of skills to external recruitment difficulties facing employers?
  • How do these problems vary by occupation, establishment size, industrial sector, and region?
  • What evidence is there about the existence of internal skill gaps within the employed workforce?
  • What are the perceptions of employers about the causes and consequences of such (internal and external) skill deficiencies?

  • Secure Access version:
Users should note that there is a Secure Access version of the data available under SN 6705. The Secure Access version includes more detailed geographic variables such as Postcodes, Unitary Authorities; Local Education Authorities; Local Learning and Skills Council Areas and Travel to Work Areas. The excluded variables, which are covered in the user guide, are also available under Secure Access. The Secure Access data have more restrictive access conditions than those made available under the standard EUL. Prospective users will need to gain ONS Accredited Researcher status, complete an extra application form and demonstrate to the data owners exactly why they need access to the additional variables. Users are strongly advised to first obtain the standard EUL version of the data to see if they are sufficient for their research requirements.
