Abstract:
Main topic of this Study is the population development of the Ruhr area from the beginning of the industrialisation process of the large scale industry in the 1840s up to the 1980s. The industrialisation process changed an area composed of various landscapes between the two rivers Ruhr and Lippe into a self-contained industrial area.
On the basis of demographical Data the processes of industrial expansion, development and alteration of the Ruhr area are shown.
The mining as economic and social foundation of the Ruhr area caused significant emigration phases and aggregation of population.
The aim of this study is to outline the alternating interdependencies of economic and population development using the case of the Ruhr area.
