Abstract

Prevalence of experience and consumption of illegal drugs, alcohol, tobacco, medications and volatile substances. Motives leading to drug use among young people. Topics: Information about the risk of drug abuse; motives for the first use of drugs; kind of first drug used; age of drug use onset; age of regular drug use; kind of drug used during the last three months; average dosage of the drug during the last month; maximum dosage of taken drug during the last month; ;hrill and Adventure Seeking Scale (TAS): physical risk taking such as parachuting, scuba diving, etc.; Experience Seeking Scale (ESS): pursuit of novel experience, including travel, unusual types of people, and novelty in art, music etc.; Dis-Inhibition (Dis): hedonistic pursuits, including drinking, partying, sex, etc.; Boredom Susceptibility (BS): aversion to repetitive or routine activities and general lack of stimulus change; type of school; strict customs and police control; voluntary/compulsory treatment of drug addicts; campaigns among youths; economic and social support for young drug addicts; friends using drugs; values system; attitude towards prostitutes, drug addicts, people suffering from AIDS; homosexuals, former prisoners; place of growing up; education level of father/mother; characteristic of family; relationship to family members.

Sampling procedure

At the first stage of sampling High Schools in these regional centres (28) were used as clusters. In addition, three towns (Nova Zagora, Botevgrad and Oriahowo, (about 25000-30000 population), located in three completely different areas of the country were included in the sample as a control group. At the second stage 12 students (50% from 10th and 50% from 11th grade) were chosen randomly to participate in the survey. The survey was carried out in 97 high schools in 31 towns of the country. The sample was preliminary stratified using the proportions of the different schools in the general population as follows: Regularly High schools - 42.7%; Colleges- 10.0%; High Technical schools - 23.8%, Professional schools - 17.2%; language and special (art, music, science) schools - 6.3%.
