Abstract
The presented data shall display the distribution of the economically active population of the cities and districts in the North Rhine-Westphalia region among the individual sectors of the manufacturing industry. These data are taken from trade and business censuses and subsequent workplace censuses. In contrast to the occupational censuses, trade and business censuses or workplace censuses identify the employees of the tradesmen (employers) in the respective workplace. As a result, there may be deviations between workplace censuses and occupation censuses (study ZA8685, Erwerbstätige nach Wirtschaftsbereiche / Employed persons by economic sector ).
Only the persons employed by the surveyed employers were recorded as employees. Thus, the group of unemployed persons is not included in the data. In addition the non-commercial sector of agriculture and private households, the public service sector, including railways, postal services and social insurance, was not initially included either. In the early censuses it was not so significant that the employee was proven not in his place of residence, but at the place of work, since the place of residence and the place of work were a short distance apart. Later, an ever-increasing number of commuters travelled long distances to their place of work, so that the place of the survey gained in importance..
For the objective differentiation of the tabular columns (designation of the time series), the designations of the 1970 workplace census with minor modifications were used.
Due to the extensive territorial changes in the 120-year period under review, which thus also cover a period prior to the state´s existence, the comments are of particular importance. Due to the considerable scope of the annotations on territorial changes they are not listed in the table header but they are available as a downloadable PDF file.
