The database presents information on all stoppages of work officially recorded by the Office for National Statistics since 1966.
The series was formerly known as <i>Industrial Stoppages Data</i> and was the responsibility of the Employment Department. The title changed to <i>Labour Disputes in the UK</i> in 1992 and the Office for National Statistics took over responsibility when the Employment Department was abolished in 1995.

  • 1966-1973: contains data on each stoppage officially recorded by the Department of Employment including: year, industry, occupation, union, main cause (plus two supplementary causes if applicable), whether national, region, number of firms, workers directly and indirectly involved at affected plants, date begun and ended, duration, days lost in same and following year, whether official.

  • 1973: as above, with the addition of: total employed, workers involved split by manual/non-manual, direct/indirect and information on the occupations of those indirectly involved.
