Abstract

Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.

The database presents information on all stoppages of work officially recorded by the Office for National Statistics since 1966.
The series was formerly known as Industrial Stoppages Data and was the responsibility of the Employment Department. The title changed to Labour Disputes in the UK in 1992 and the Office for National Statistics took over responsibility when the Employment Department was abolished in 1995.
Main Topics:

The data base presents information on all recorded stoppages for the years 1981 to 1984. For 1982, the information is given by industry groupings under both the Standard Industrial Classification 1968 and the Standard Industrial Classification Revised 1980.
The information covers region, county, industry, public sector (all coded), MLH (SIC Group under the SIC Revised 1980), number of workers involved (both directly and indirectly, manual and non-manual), working days lost in the current and following years, and the total number employed at the stoppage establishment by size bands (if known). Additional coded information is also given for the total number of workers involved, number of working days lost, duration of stoppage in working days, cause of stoppage, sympathetic action, official or other, number and names of trade unions involved.
