Abstract
The concept of «Living conditions» is derived from a public research and assessment project under the name of “Survey on Living Conditions” started by the Bratteli government in the early seventies in Norway. The work of collecting this kind of data was continued by Statistics Norway. The Survey on Living Conditions 1987 was the third survey that was planned and carried out by Statistics Norway. In addition to the ordinary survey initiated by Statistics Norway, there was conducted an additional survey commissioned by the Department of Culture and Science on a sample of people aged 16 to 24. The questionnaire was identical to the questionnaire of the main survey. The list of variables was also identical to the main survey/survey of elders, but the variables that were created on the basis of questions that was not asked to different sections of the population, will not contain data. The objective was to map out the actual living conditions for different sections of the population, emphasizing on groups with a low income and others that are believed to live under special conditions. The surveys on living conditions can be looked upon as a continuation of the objective that has formed the basis for consumer and income surveys. In 1987, about 60% of the questionnaire from 1983 was retrieved as a basis for future use. New themes that were created concerned particularly some economic circumstances as well as various aspects on people's leisure activities. There were also placed a particular emphasis on identifying the conditions for youths and elders. The data on youths is therefore published as a separate survey, whereas the data on elders is published as a part of the main survey of 1987. Parts of the main sample are panels with the surveys of 1980 and 1983, which enables analyzing the development of living conditions in the population. Until 1995 were these kinds of surveys on living conditions conducted every 3 to 4 years, whereas from 1996 they are conducted...
