Abstract
The comparison between the party- and election-system and the election results of the monarchy during the German Kaiser Reich on the one hand and the democratic state and social order during the Weimar Republic on the other hand was always opposed to the difficulties of structural and functional differences and the incomparability of the statistical data basis.
The author of the study in hand develops a method of compiling and processing statistical material published by the official statistics. This method allows for the first time to make direct quantifying comparisons between the numerical data on election and electorate of the Kaiser Reich on the one side and of the Weimar Republic on the other side.
Through the construction of new statistical variables – the “comparable areas” of this study – the author succeeded in creating a new survey level which can deal with all significant regional and structural differences in the compiling criteria. This is how direct comparison across different epochs of Data on election, population, religion and occupation statistics is made possible.
Data basis of the study:
- Reichstag election of 1912 (as the last one of the Kaiser Reich)
- The elections of May and December in the consolidation year 1924
The construction of a joint survey level for all the official data on altogether 277 comparable areas based on Prussia´s administrative districts within the borders of 1925 served as a solution for the central statistical-quantitative problems.
Topics:
- Election results of the three Reichstag elections by comparative areas 1912 and 1924
- Full time employed persons by economic sectors 1907 and 1925
- Population by sex and religious affiliation 1910 and 1925
- Eligible voters, election participants and votes cast for the Reichstag elections in 1912 and 1924
