The Scottish Referendum Survey was part of a more general study of the Scottish referendum of 1997, which covered the background to the referendum, local and national campaigning, media coverage and analysis of the results. The study aimed to provide a comprehensive and authoritative account of a major event in Scottish political history, to enhance knowledge of referendums and to draw lessons about the future use of referendums from the Scottish experience.
Main Topics:
The dataset comprises the responses to a postal survey of a sample of the Scottish electorate just after the devolution referendum of September 1997. The questionnaire focussed on vote in the referendum, opinion on constitutional change, national class and party identity, and attitudes towards the Scottish parliament. Further questions concerned the social and economic characteristics of respondents.
