In 2015, Istat carried out a survey on the integration of second generations with the aim of investigating the critical issues and positive experiences of the inclusion processes of children with a migrant background. The survey involved lower and upper secondary schools attended by at least 5 foreign students, where was interviewed children with citizenship other than Italian. In accordance with Italian law, children born in Italy to foreign parents were also considered foreigners, while those born abroad who acquired Italian citizenship were considered Italian. In the case of dual citizenship of which at least one was Italian, the respondent was considered Italian. For an overall understanding of the phenomenon, Istat also involved Italian students (as a control group). The questionnaire is structurated into several sections. In particular, in addition to the socio-demographic information, the first section concerns the history of migration (if migrants), with questions about future expectations and the feeling of belonging. The second section - dedicated to foreign students - concerns the knowledge and use of the Italian language. The third section deals with school, teachers and classmates, specifically investigating the influence of other subjects on school choices, the judgement on their own school performance, the way in which they perform their homework, the characteristics of the persons most frequently attended, the judgement on their classmates, teachers and family members, and the importance of study. The fourth section collects information on leisure time and friends, investigating in particular the methods of employment of the post-school time, attendance at specific places, the use of the Internet, and any episodes of discrimination suffered by their peers.
