Abstract

Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.Understanding Society (UK Household Longitudinal Study), which began in 2009, is conducted by the Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) at the University of Essex, and the survey research organisations Verian Group and NatCen. It builds on and incorporates the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS), which began in 1991. The Understanding Society: Linked Nest Auto-enrolment Pensions Dataset, 2014-2022: Secure Access study contains a file extracted from the National Employment Savings Trust (Nest), a defined contribution workplace pension scheme set up as part of the UK government's workplace pension reforms under the Pensions Act 2008, with the first members being brought into the scheme in October 2012. This file can be linked (within the UK Data Service Secure Lab) to Understanding Society participants using the cross-wave personal identifier (variable pidp). For all individuals with a valid consent to Nest linkage collected in Wave 11 of Understanding Society, and a Nest account, the data file includes information on: participation in, and levels of savings and withdrawals within, the UK's pensions auto-enrolment system; workers' behaviour within the workplace pensions system; labour market dynamics, including earnings patterns broken down into individual employments.
