Interview data included different types of reaction to road traffic noise, the respondent's general state of health, perception of harmfulness of traffic noise, and demographic characteristics. Physical measurements were made of noise level in the area.

48 study areas in 4 cities, Toronto, London, Tillsonburg, Ingersoll, in Ontario. Sites had to fill a cell in the study design, have 50 dwellings, apparently homogeneous in socio-economic status, and be in a reasonably compact group, preferably a similar distance from the same road. The person who came to the door was asked for an interview if aged 18 or over
