International Social Survey Program (ISSP), Norwegian part

ISSP prepares and coordinates annual surveys in the member countries. The topics for research are repeated at intervals of a few years. The "Leisure and Sport" survey was conducted for the first time in 2007. NSD conducted the survey in Norway the same year. The objective of the surveys is to create an empirical foundation for studying attitudes, views and behaviors in questions concerning leisure and sport.

Abstract

This survey is carried out on the basis of the research collaboration in "The International Social Survey Programme" (ISSP). ISSP is an international organisation that prepares and coordinates annual surveys in its member countries, mainly within the fields of political science and sociology. The topic of the surveys varies, but are repeated at intervals of a few years. In this way, changes in behavioral patterns and attitudes over time as well as differences between countries and cultures are possible to be detected and measured. The Norwegian Social Science Data Services (NSD) became a member of ISSP in 1989 and have since been responsible for carrying out the surveys in Norway. In connection with the survey, Norwegian researchers are invited to add supplementary questions to the Norwegian respondents. In 2007, the objective was to collect data concerning sports and leisure; the frequency and functions of leisure activities, happiness deriving from different activities, reasons to play sports and games, sociological aspects of sport, social and political participation, hindrances for desired leisure activities and perception of happiness and health. The Norwegian supplementary part was in 2007 prepared in collaboration with Ørnulf Seippel, Institute for Social Research, Åse Strandbu, NOVA, and Nils Asle Bergsgard, International Research Institute of Stavanger, Jan Erik Ingebrigtsen, Ingar Mehus og Håkon Leiulfsrud from Institute of Sociology and Political Science, NTNU. The questions in the Norwegian part are related to network, attitudes to childrens' sports, desire of activity, duties in sports clubs, sports on TV, internet and as a conversational topic.
