Abstract
The social network in an American city and political attitudes among
white citizens.
Topics: judgement on public expenditures and the economic situation;
attitude to work permits for foreigners and desired employment policies
of the government; extensive determination of social network;
relationship with neighbors and colleagues; friendships; membership in
clubs and organizations; leisure activities; social distance to ethnic
groups; attitude to race problems and the Klu Klux Klan; attitude to
trade unions and communists; religious denomination of parents; social
and regional origins; local residency; housing conditions;
self-assessment of social class; sympathies in wage conflicts;
occupation and success orientation; judgement on various occupations;
weekly working hours; educational goals; desired number of children;
party preference of respondent and father; naming closest friends.
Scales: work satisfaction, authoritarianism, dogmatism, sociability
and traditional family ideology.
Demography: age; marital status; number of children; ages of children
(classified); age and number of siblings; religious denomination;
religiousness; school education; occupation; professional career; type
of company; household income; head of household; party inclination;
party identification; self-assessment of social class.
Interviewer rating: willingness to cooperate and language difficulties
of respondent; presence of other persons and their influence on the
interview; judgement on the building; length of interview.
Interviewer observation: while the respondent completed a written part
of the survey the interviewer described the living-room of the
respondent e.g. all items of furniture in the living-room, the style of
furnishing, the condition of the residence, the wallpaper and the
carpet design.
With some questions the interviewer was asked to provide information
on the gestures of the respondent.
