In 1996, Statistics Norway introduced a new system for surveys related to the level of living. Starting in 1997, two Level of Living surveys are carried out annually; a cross-sectional survey with rotating topics in the fall, and a panel survey topically focused on health, residence and work in the spring. Abstract

Statistics Norway's (SSB) Level of living - cross sectional study (with rotating themes) has as it's primary objective to, over time, cover all important issues concerning the level of living. The topics have rotated in the following way: Working conditions in 1996, 2000, 2003, 2006 and 2009; Living conditions, community and leisure in 1997, 2001, 2004 and 2007; Health in 1998, 2002, 2005 and 2008. The main topic of the Level of Living Survey 2001 is living conditions . The issues that are covered includes: - place of residence and household - housing conditions and housing standard - community - social contact - mortgage and residential economy - holiday homes and cottages - violence and crime - organisational membership - leisure activities - outdoor life External agencies were given the opportunity of paying for the inclusion of certain subjects in the survey. Some of these subjects (such as smoking habits, travel patterns and cohabitation) are not incorporated in this dataset, but can be found in Statistics Norway's omnibus survey nr. 3, 2001.
