Abstract

The Monthly Production Inquiry (MPI) is designed to meet the government need for the production of a monthly Index of Production (IoP), and is used to estimate the change in the total number of employee jobs in the production industries each month. It provides 75.5 per cent of the current price turnover data used in the compilation of the IoP and over 90 per cent of the data used to estimate the number of employees in the production industries. Both of these measures are key short-term economic indicators. The MPI provides 16.5 per cent of the output measure of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and feeds into the income measure of GDP along with other labour market data. There is no other official source of short-term economic data for the production sector with the comprehensive coverage of the MPI.

Linking to other business studies
These data contain Inter-Departmental Business Register reference numbers. These are anonymous but unique reference numbers assigned to business organisations. Their inclusion allows researchers to combine different business survey sources together. Researchers may consider applying for other business data to assist their research.

Main Topics:

The MPI collects data on total turnover, export turnover, employees, merchanted goods, plus, for the engineering industries, orders-on-hand, export orders-on-hand, new orders and new export orders. A small number of additional variables are collected from certain specific industries.
