Adult patients (aged 16 years and over) who attended a main Accident and Emergency Department during January or February or March 2012, in England. Patients were excluded from samples if they attended primarily to obtain contraception (e.g. the morning after pill), had suffered a miscarriage or another form of abortive pregnancy outcome whilst at the hospital, or had a concealed pregnancy. Patients were also excluded if they were known to be current inpatients, did not have a UK postal address, or had requested their details were not used for any purpose other than their clinical care. Attendances at Minor Injuries Units or Walk-in Centres were also not eligible.
