Abstract

Survey about the language habits of the Bavarian population and attitude to use of the dialect. Topics: speaking dialect; earlier speaking of dialect and reasons for today´s non-use; identification of the regional origin of one´s own dialect; learning the dialect and frequency of current use; speaking dialect by family and friends; desire for better High German or dialect; self-assessment of quality of personal High German; feeling when speaking High German; situations in which dialect is primarily used; connection between school achievements and dialect of the child; judgement on the influence of dialect on social reputation of a person; assumption about the percentage of the population speaking dialect. Demography: age (classified); sex; marital status; religious denomination; frequency of church attendance; school education; occupational training; occupation; employment; company size; area of business of company; sources of income; social origins; local residency; regional origins; work at place of residence; degree of urbanization of place of residence in childhood. Interviewer rating: degree of urbanization; use of dialect by interviewer during interview.
