Abstract

On behalf of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation´s Department of Policy and Consulting, Ipsos conducted a combined qualitative and quantitative survey on structural change in Germany. The aims of the project were to gain a comprehensive understanding of structural change and its consequences for people´s personal (professional) biographies, their identification with the regions as well as different attitudes towards politics and community. The qualitative interviews were conducted with citizens in four regions of Germany affected by structural change. These were: Lusatia, Greater Chemnitz/Zwickau, the Ruhr area and Saarland. The quantitative survey was set up to be representative of the voting population in Germany. Interviews were conducted in the selected regions as well as nationwide as a reference region. In addition, the survey data set was supplemented with structural data at the district level in the regions concerned. Thematically, both surveys were intertwined. Only the quantitative data are archived at GESIS.Length of residence in the city or municipality; previously lived in another region and then moved to the region or left the region in the meantime and moved back; willingness to move out of the region for a more attractive job; general satisfaction with life; satisfaction with different areas of life (job situation, housing situation and living environment); worries about the future; local infrastructure (shopping facilities, family doctor); accessibility of shopping facilities and family doctor 10 years ago; identification with the region, with Germany and with Europe; identity: pride in being a citizen of the town or municipality, Germany and the European Union; confidence in the future; locus of control (personal efficacy); assessment of the regional economic situation; change in the regional economic situation in the last 10 years; direction of development of the economic situation in the region; development of the region in the last 10 years in...
