Abstract

This project explored the extent of platform cooperativism in the UK. The research specifically sought to investigate platform cooperatives working to provide alternatives to existing ‘gig economy’ platforms or in the area of cooperative technology, digital design and data ownership, as well as the wider network of organisations supporting them. How individuals in local contexts are affected by and respond to dramatic institutional changes is not well understood. An important gap in our knowledge is in describing and...

The sample consists of two individuals working within existing platform cooperatives in the UK and four individuals working for organisations supporting the development of the (platform) cooperative movement. Interviews were carried out either in person or via Skype and Zoom. Participants were given a short introduction to the study and consent was obtained prior to the interview being recorded. Each interview lasted approximately one hour.
