Finnish Youth Surveys

Advisory Council for Youth Affairs (Nuora), nowadays called the State Youth Council, started to produce Youth Surveys in 1994. This survey series charts attitudes and expectations of Finnish young people aged 15 - 29. Each survey contains both current questions and recurring questions which are repeated over time, enabling the study of long-term attitude changes. The main themes include attitudes to education, working life, social security, spending, drug use, and young people's willingness to participate in order to influence decision-making.

Abstract

Main themes of the Finnish Youth Survey 2023 included beliefs and spirituality. The survey explores young people's beliefs, behaviour and their perceptions of meaning in everyday life. First, the respondents were asked about their feelings regarding daily life and their views on society. They were also asked whether they are part of a church or religious community. Additionally, respondents were asked about prayer habits, the religiosity of their childhood home and their own beliefs. The questionnaire also explored what participants considered to give life meaning. Next, the respondents' world and life views were explored through various statements, as well as their perceptions of science. Experiences of uncertainty and insecurity were also addressed. Next, respondents were asked to answer questions related to schools and educational institutions. These included topics such as the use of religious symbols and the visibility of religion and other beliefs in the school environment. Finally, the survey concluded with questions about the participants' well-being and daily life. The questions concerned topics such as minority group membership and financial situation of the household. Background variables included, among others, the respondent's gender, age, region of residence, mother tongue, marital status, financial situation, economic activity, education level and household composition.
