Abstract

The simple, close to nature outdoor life has for a long time been a widespread ideal, and is also the objective that the governmental outdoor life policies are based on. This was further emphasized with the last revision of the outdoor life law, when there was added an object clause in 1996 that states that the outdoor life have to be environment-friendly. The question is, however, if the outdoor life culture is about to change. This survey confirms earlier surveys that say that the outdoor life still is in a strong position among the population, both in terms of interest, actual practice and appreciation. This study shows, however, that the way outdoor life is practiced is changing. The simple and lesser organized outdoor life is in decline, whereas modern activities such as snowboarding, off-road cycling, and heli-skiing are increasing either as a part of peoples outdoor life practice or in their world of notion.
