The main purpose of this survey was to identify non-retirement migrants in each of the study areas so that these individuals could be contacted again at a later date and more detailed questions asked concerning their post-migrational experiences. As the sample was taken from the whole population of each area, the opportunity to gather some basic information concerning the age, sex, marital status, employment status, birthplace, completion of full-time education, length of residence at current address and size of the household was taken. Such an approach has not only proved successful in identifying non-retirement migrants but has also enabled a comparison of the various sub-groups of the population to see for example whether significant differences in the educational attainment and employment characteristics of migrants and non-migrants exist.
