Abstract
Since 1996, the Center for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr (ZMSBw) has conducted a representative survey of the German population on defense and security policy issues on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Defense. In 2011, this study was continued. For this purpose, N = 1602 persons were interviewed on various issues from May 20,2011 until June 6, 2011. The present survey focused in particular on the associations with the Federal Armed Forces, evaluation of the Federal Armed Forces motto ´Wir.Dienen.Deutschland´(We serve Germany), rating of the performance of the Federal Armed Forces in its missions at home and abroad, image of the Federal Armed Forces in society, importance of the Federal Armed Forces for Germany, and attitude towards voluntary military service in the Federal Armed Forces.Associations with the Federal Armed Forces (open); personal experiences with the Federal Armed Forces in the last 12 months; evaluation of these experiences with the Federal Armed Forces; perception of the Federal Armed Forces in the last 12 months on the following occasions: in everyday life, at public events, conversations with friends, relatives or colleagues, during broadcasts on television or on the radio, articles on the Internet and reports in newspapers and magazines; personal impression of the Federal Armed Forces on the respective occasions; personal attitude towards the Federal Armed Forces; evaluation of the Federal Armed Forces motto ´Wir.Dienen.Deutschland´ (split half: ´Deutschland Dienen´); reasons for positive or negative evaluation (open); motto ´Wir.Dienen.Deutschland´ (split half: ´Deutschland Dienen´) fits to the Federal Armed Forces; reasons for assessment does not fit to the Federal Armed Forces (open); associations with the term ´serve´ (open); motivation to serve as a soldier of the Federal Armed Forces (open); rating of the Federal Armed Forces in various areas (performance in its missions at home and abroad, equipment and...
