Abstract
This data set is derived from the «The National Broadcasting System's User Survey, 1980, Form 7", conducted by Statistics Norway (SSB) on commission by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK). The survey from 1980 was a part of Statistics Norway's annual listener and viewer survey conducted for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation. Several special surveys were conducted in the period 1978 to 1985, while surveys of a more general character only were conducted in 1980 and 1983. From 1985, a new arrangement with three general surveys per year was put to use. The main purpose of the 1980-survey, like the previous general surveys, was to estimate the proportion of the adult population that followed certain programs on the radio and on television in the course of a particular study period, and to examine how the listeners and viewers were divided by background characteristics such as gender, age, education, profession and so on.
Some questions concerning special topics were also asked in the 1980-survey. These special topics could be divided in the two following groups:
1. What position does the radio have in people's everyday life? This was covered through questions concerning in what contexts people listened to the radio and how they assessed the program offer.
2. Comparing peoples radio listening habits to the use of other mass media such as newspapers, magazines, cassette players etc.
This was especially important because one of the purposes of this survey was to study what effect the introduction of a “Program 2” would have on the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation itself and the radio habits of its audience.
12 types of forms were prepared for the survey. Every form contained questions concerning the programs for two particular program days (the two last days before the day of the interview). The 12 forms were divided into two main groups. In the first group of forms (group A), supplementary questions concerning the use of other media were included....
