Abstract

The object of this study was to examine changes in industrial employment in Tayside on a detailed local basis with the purpose of more accurately revealing the nature of general trends in employment over a period of time.
The 1911 census was the first in which information on both industry and occupation was secured in sufficient detail to make possible at least an approximate comparison with later censuses. The 1951 census was the last in which a 100 per cent coverage was made of industrial employment and occupations. Data derived from returns made for the census of 1911 indicate the character of each local economy established in the course of the 19th century. Changes since then are indicated by similar data from the census of 1951.
