Abstract

The data collection "Database on the hospital administrative apparatus" was part of the "Program for healthcare research", initiated and financed by the Research Council of Norway and the Norwegian Council for Applied Social Research (NORAS). Norwegian Centre for Research Data (now Sikt - Norwegian Agency for Shared Services in Education and Research) was responsible for the data collection. The database formed a general starting point that gave an almost total overview of all health (related) institutions in Norway in 1988. From this total overview, 130 central institutions, somatic and psychiatric hospitals (and departments) were singled out as units in further data collection. This was supplemented with information on how the hospital's administrative apparatus is structured, its job structure and the staff's competence profile. As a measure of competence, information was collected on highest education, further education and seniority.
