Abstract
The study emerged in the context of the research project ‘Changes in the Occupation Structure in Western Europe, 1882-1970’, FU Berlin), which was financed by the Volkswagenwerk foundation in behalf of Henk van Dijk and Hartmut Kealble. The study deals with an aspect of the history of the structure of labor force: long term changes of differences between regions in the 20th century, long term increase or attenuation of regional disparities in the structure of labor force in Germany between 1895 and 1970.
The data bases of the study are occupation censuses in Germany between 1895 and 1970 and results from the micro census of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) as represented by the Institute for labor market and occupation research of the Federal labor office. The occupation censuses from the times before and between the wars do not take the entire labor force into account. Especially workers in agriculture and in public services are missing. The occupation census also shows regional differences of labor markets and of employment opportunities. For the construction of long term time series it was necessary to look for solution in the areas of geographic differentiation of regions and the standardization of classification of occupations.
The project addresses the question how the regional structure of labor force changed between 1882 and 1970 in the German Reich and the FRG.
