Abstract

The survey, conducted by the University of Tampere for its second-year students in 2015, examined tutoring, progress with studies, and planning of studies. Studies were first charted by asking the respondents to what extent they agreed with a number of statements relating to studies and study progress (e.g. "University studies have met my expectations", "Studies in the university have been harder than I expected"). Satisfaction with student tutoring was surveyed. The respondents' participation in introductory events organized by the university and the respondents' own faculty was charted. Furthermore, satisfaction with these events and other sources of information for new students was surveyed. Planning of studies was examined with questions about the usefulness of the personal study plan (HOPS), support received from the university when planning studies, and own initiative in searching for information supporting planning. Opinions on the university as a study enviroment were charted by asking the repondents to what extent they agreed with a number of statements (e.g. "Students are treated fairly and equally", "The study environment encourages learning"). The respondents' interest in internationalization activities (student exchange, language courses, international tutoring etc.) was surveyed. Finally, the respondents were asked whether they studied full-time or part-time. The background variables included the respondent's age, gender, basic education, field of study, faculty, number of credits (altogether, in the major subject, in the minor subject, in open university, and abroad), and the year R graduated from upper secondary school.
