Because the ASPIRES cohort had left school at this point, participants were recruited by obtaining a sample of young people born between 1st September 1998 and 31st August 1999 who were registered on the Open Electoral Roll. Following data cleaning, the overall achieved sample of 7,635 young people was roughly proportional to (though not fully representative of) official government population estimates in England for 21- and 22-year-olds based on sex, ethnicity, region, Index of Multiple Deprivation, Urban/Rural classification and long-lasting health conditions.
