The principal aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that the ideological mapping of Labour politicians is best drawn on the basis of two dimensions: state/market and national sovereignty/interdependence. The research was intended to contribute to knowledge and understanding of the ideological configuration of the Labour Party, particularly over European integration.
Main Topics:

Topics covered include Labour Parliamentarians' attitudes to the issues of: Economic and Monetary Union; Economic Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM); European Union (EU) fiscal policy; industrial strategy; `subsidiarity'; constitutional reform of EU institutions with particular reference to Qualified Majority Voting (QMV), the sovereignty of the UK Parliament; `enlargement'; jurisprudence.
Standard Measures
Respondents were asked to `tick' a scale from `strongly agree' `agree', `neither', `disagree', to `strongly disagree', for 59 attitudinal statements.

Data collection mode

Postal survey
The questionnaire was sent to all Labour MPs and MEPs in four mailings between November 1995 and February 1996. All non-respondents were contacted by telephone at the end of January 1996. The overall response rate was 33% for MPs and 47% for MEPs. The sample was tested for validity using several measures of parliamentary behaviour over Europe, and also by analysis of respondents in terms of their cohort, i.e. which general election had brought them into Parliament or followed their entry in a by-election.
