Abstract
Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.
This dataset contains administrative records of candidates taking A/AS level examinations, matched with their GCSE examination results, for the years 1994-1997. The data were taken from yearly records produced by examination boards for statistical results for the DfEE from 1993, and updated yearly.
The project aimed to develop multilevel modelling techniques to handle measurements with errors efficiently and handle ordered categorical data such as examination grade scales, and to study the relationship between multiple outcomes of subject scores. The project also studied the effects of gender, institution type and examination board on results, and changes over time in the pattern of these effects.
Main Topics:
The dataset consists of four files. One set contains the total point score at A/AS level for about 700,000 individuals during the period 1994-1997, with matched GCSE results and some background variables covering individuals and insitutions. The other three files contain similar information, for one subject only - mathematics, chemistry and geography - and for one year only - 1997. The documentation lists variable names, codes and descriptions.
