This group of six surveys assesses children's attainments in a sample of English and Welsh primary and secondary schools. The children in each age group were given a battery of tests and the results related to detailed information on the schools attended and to background, biographical and personal information on each child. In the case of Welsh children, linguistic information was also included.Main Topics:
This survey covers children aged 14 years or more in Welsh secondary schools. Variables as for SN:60009, with the following additions.
Language - a test in two parts. Part one is the same as that used for the 10+ group (see SN:60008 for description). Part two is divided into 2 sections, 20 minutes being allowed for the first and 30 minutes for the second section, consisting of 79 items covering vocabulary, comprehension, composition, various aspects of Welsh usage and appreciation of Welsh verse and prose. Welsh Reading: this is the same test as that used for the 10+ group (see 60008 for description).
Further information also includes: data on linguistic background; detailed parental occupational data; an attitude scale for Welsh; number of subjects taught at school in Welsh and the sex of the Welsh language teacher.
A language questionnaire designed on the pattern of Hoffman's Bilingual Schedule is also administered to pupils (answers serving as a cross-check on the validity of answers already given to questions concerning use of Welsh).
