A transparent overlay was constructed with 1 x 1 km squares at the 1 inch to 1 mile scale and with eight evenly spaced dots per square. This was laid on the 1 inch to 1 mile OS map and the number of dots falling on land depicted as being under Forestry Commission management was counted. The number was multiplied by 12.5 to give and approximation to the number of hectares managed by the Forestry Commission. The multiplication was made on the sum of the dots for the 25 1 x 1 km squares comprising a 5 x 5 km square. Rounding to whole numbers, when necessary, was alternately up and down.
