Abstract

Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.

The dataset was derived from childhood waves of the 'National Child Development Study' (NCDS - available from UKDA under GN 33004), during the course of a project funded by the ESRC's Health Variations Programme, titled 'Income Dynamics and Health Inequalities'. One of the major aims of this project was to explore the role of income in generating health inequalities within a life course perspective. The influence of family income in childhood on later health outcomes, therefore became one of the central focuses of the study.

For the second edition (August 2008), the serial number has been replaced with a new one, variable Ncdsid. This change has been made for all datasets in the NCDS series. Further information may be found in the ‘CLS Confidentiality and Data Security Review’, included in the documentation.

Main Topics:

The dataset contains the following variables:
  • ncdsid - serial number
  • p-faminc - predicted log permanent family income (Wave 3)
  • data-3 - valid data wave 3 of survey
  • data-2 - valid data wave 2 of survey
  • data-1 - valid data wave 1 of survey
  • data-0 - valid data birth survey

Universe

Respondents to the NCDS, starting with the Perinatal Mortality Survey in 1958, and the following three waves - 1965, 1969, and 1974 (when respondents were aged 7, 11 and 16 years respectively).

Sampling procedure

Purposive selection/case studies
The sample for permanent income data was limited to those cases where all valid data exists in each of the NCDS childhood waves, and only to those respondents with at least one natural parent at Wave 3 of the survey (see documentation for further details).
