The study is of the fit between career aspirations and career opportunities achieved by individuals, organisations and occupations, within pathology laboratories in a large NHS Regional Health Authority. The information generated is not only of academic interest, but of practical value to the participants.

Sampling procedure

The NHS was chosen as a large and important organisation and as many persons as resources allowed were interviewed within a single region. It was planned to match laboratories by size, urban/rural and teaching/non-teaching and to interview all persons in this sample of laboratories.
