Abstract

Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.

The purpose of this study was to match the results of the 1983 and 1987 General Elections in the United Kingdom to the results of the 1981 Census, by parliamentary constituency.

Main Topics:

Some variables relate to the 10% Census sample and are marked as such. The remainder are from the 100% Census. Census variables for Northern Ireland are incomplete, and had to be estimated from the published reports. The exact method by which district councils (and for Belfast, wards) were assigned to parliamentary constituency is given in the codebook. In general, variables measuring economic activity and industry are missing: several occupational and idustrial variables were estimated from the 1971 Census, including percentage of employers and managers and percentage of agricultural workers.
