Abstract

To investigate the background characteristics, attitudes and goals of Essex undergraduate students on entry, and to follow up these data with data on the reactions of graduating students to their experience of university and their responses to certain questions on political and religious attitudes that might have been expected to change and for which data were collected when they entered.Main Topics:
Variables
As this survey follows upon Essex Student Survey, 1964 (SN:65008), the reader is asked to refer to the detailed description of that survey. Enlargements and additions are as follows: background information also includes sixth form specialisation of respondent; attitudes and voluntary activities. Occupation is coded more finely here (10 categories instead of 5). There is an added section on reading habits (including newspapers), preference in television viewing and radio habits, and socio-cultural interests and activities, together with a section on the good and bad distinguishing features of Essex.
