Abstract

The survey focused on the 2000 presidential elections in Finland. The respondents were asked whether they had voted in the second round of the presidential elections of the year 2000, for which of the candidates they had voted, and to what extent they identified themselves with their candidate. They were also asked when they made their voting decision, and how did the media, advertising, and close friends affected their decision to vote. In addition, the respondents were presented with a list of various things and asked to say which of them affected their choice of candidate in the second round of the elections. The respondents were also asked about their attitude towards all seven candidates before the elections. They were also asked to tell who they had voted for in the first round. All respondents were asked about their opinion of the election campaign and how the candidates came through on the satirical panel show "Uutisvuoto" on YLE TV1. The respondents were asked for what party they would vote in parliamentary elections and how sure they were about it, for what party they had voted in the previous parliamentary elections, how interested they were in politics and presidential elections. The respondents were also asked to place themselves on a left-right scale. Finally, they were asked to estimate Martti Ahtisaari's actions during his term in office. Background variables included the respondent's gender, mother tongue, age, marital status, composition and income of the household, education, occupation, information on work, working hours, membership in a trade union, ownership of apartment, social class, place of dwelling, voting in elections, and position on a left-right scale. Background variables have been updated in August 1999. The data also include a case id variable hl, which can be used to append this data to data FSD1040.
