Abstract
In 2020, the research project ’10 Years Up’ (10yup.nl) started at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. It is the effort of a multi-disciplinary team. The study follows a longitudinal cohort of 500 young adults from age 16 for 10 years. The participants were recruited by random selection from the general Dutch population of 16-year old adolescents. Every three months, they use a mobile app to indicate which goals they are pursuing by swiping right or left, and answer questions about how they go about realizing them. They also fill in questionnaires about various other topics related to their current circumstances, health and well-being. This way, we will be able to determine antecedents and consequences of goal setting and striving as a self-regulation strategy over time. Finding out about how young people’s choices affect their health and well-being helps us to be able to guide them in the important transition from adolescent to adult. By knowing which goals are important to them in this period, we can support them in their development.
