Abstract

The study is divided roughly in five topic areas: political-societal experiences and orientations; youth and becoming adult as a phase in life in the framework of the course of life; courses of development and development risks; Life styles, cultures and social reference groups of young people and ultimately the social-structural differentiating of the youth phase. Topics: changes through the turning point; political alienation; moral orientations; orientation pattern of structuring life; time and future orientation; development transformations and pace of development; events in one´s life; stress as a child and in adolescence; use of cigarettes and use of alcohol; deviant behavior and delinquency; depressive symptoms; friendships; cliques; time budget and use of time; leisure activities; games as a child; religiousness; youth orientation; affinity with youth cultural groups; transfer of cultural capital; support by parents; media usage; religiousness; attitude to school; parental child-raising attitude; support by parents (these topics present a selection; a more detailed listing for the first wave can be found under ´Youth ´92´, ZA No. 2323).

Sampling procedure

Non-probability: Quota
Representative quota sample of young people/young adults between the ages of 13-29 years. An over-sample was selected: west and east should be represented equally and the five age groups (13 - 15-year-olds, 16 - 18-year-olds, 19 - 21-year-olds, 22 - 24-year-olds, 25 - 29-year-olds) should occur in equal proportions in the sample. Further quota characteristics were the state and city size. Furthermore, within the five age classes there were quotas for the degree of education (Western Germany: junior high school, secondary school without high school graduation, high school graduation, college; Eastern Germany: junior high school / secondary school without high school graduation / POS, high school graduation / EOS, college).
