The project fills a substantial gap in international comparative research evidence on children’s own views of their lives and well-being. The purpose is to improve children's well-being by creating awareness among children, their parents and their communities, opinion leaders, decision makers, professionals and the general public.

In order to achieve a nationally representative sample, around 1000 children each were drawn from school years 4, 6 and 8. The children were aged 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13 respectively. There were three different versions of the questionnaire – one for each age group. As well as including the content of the international survey, the survey in England asked some additional questions on children’s experiences of parenting and on their family economic circumstances.

Earlier surveys by the same team covering children and young people’s well-being were conducted in 2008 (see SN 7898) and 2010 (SN 7899).

Main Topics:
To gain a subjective view of the well-being of young people, the questionnaire was structured around a broad range of topics as it follows:

personal details and self-identity;

home and family;

money and possessions

friends and other relationships;

school life;

feelings and emotions.
</abstract>
