Each round of surveys asks a common core of questions, a unique source for monitoring trends within nations, and comparisons across nations. All research questions and analyses are undertaken independently of government. The New Russia Barometer Surveys (NRB) comprise one series within the CSPP surveys. They have been conducted annually since 1992, and consist of interviews with a stratified representative nationwide sample of Russian adults. The interviews last approximately one hour, and collect information about political, economic and social attitudes and behaviour. The twelfth NRB survey (NRB XII) was a nationwide representative sample survey conducted immediately after the Duma election in December, 2003. As is appropriate to a post-election survey, many questions focused on campaign activities and voting behaviour. Questions about President Putin and potential candidates for the presidential election in March 2004 are also included. Given that half the seats in the Duma are elected from single-member districts by a very different ballot than the headlined list system, detailed questions were also asked about how individuals cast both votes. A number of standard NRB trend questions were also included.
