      <abstract xml:lang="en">&lt;P&gt;Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;p&gt;The aims of the &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Access to the Countryside for Recreation and Sport, 1983-1985 &lt;/span&gt;studies were:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt; to assess the nature and scale of the demands for access to the countyside for recreation and sport; &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;to develop a better understanding of the complex processes by which access is achieved, sustained or modified over time; &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;to develop an understanding of the attitudes taken by individuals, bodies and organisations involved in, or affected by access; &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;and to develop an understanding of a broad range of current specific access issues.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;</abstract><abstract xml:lang="en">&lt;B&gt;Main Topics&lt;/B&gt;:&lt;BR&gt;The data are derived from three surveys in four study tracts.  The surveys were of farmers and other resource controllers (Farmers interview), persons domiciled in or near two of the study tracts (Household interview) and users of the study sites (Site survey). The study tracts were in North Wales, the Peak-Pennine area, the East Midlands and Dorset.&lt;br&gt; The principal topics covered included access to cultivated and uncultivated countryside; access to water for recreation; management of the countryside for access; user group conflicts and the representation of interests.</abstract>
