To investigate the E182 class of records in the Public Record Office for the period 1799 to 1802 to establish the extent of survival of the two types of documents which record individuals' payments of income tax: a) Bank Certificates issued by the Bank of England to tax payers making their payments direct to the Bank; b) Commercial Commissioner's Returns listing income tax payments with each tax payer identified by a number rather than by name.&lt;br&gt; 2.  To select samples of the material for conversion to a machine-readable form.</abstract><abstract xml:lang="en">&lt;B&gt;Main Topics&lt;/B&gt;:&lt;BR&gt;</abstract><abstract xml:lang="en">The information taken from the Bank Certificates for Westminster, Middlesex, Surrey, Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire and Somerset includes name, place or address, amount of income tax paid, number of instalments and payee if other than the tax payer.  The information taken from the Commercial Commissioner's Returns for Bristol (Somerset) and Lancashire, only includes amount of income tax paid with each tax payer identified by a number rather than by name.</abstract>
