As the sample was taken from the whole population of each area, the opportunity to gather some basic information concerning the age, sex, marital status, employment status, birthplace, completion of full-time education, length of residence at current address and size of the household was taken. Such an approach has not only proved successful in identifying non-retirement migrants but has also enabled a comparison of the various sub-groups of the population to see for example whether significant differences in the educational attainment and employment characteristics of migrants and non-migrants exist.
